I recently completed my senior year of high school and have been admitted to four different undergraduate schools (I am currently in the process of applying to college). After I received my own college acceptance letter, I've realized that the people who read my writing are primarily interested in knowing what kind of a person I am and how I plan to contribute to the campus community.Describing myself is a theme throughout this piece. The objective is to create an overall impression of my personality by introducing myself as a young man or woman who is unique and probably eager to learn more about the world. I've found that the admissions officers that look at my written work feel a more confident feeling than other types of applicants. Here are some of the common questions about the admissions officers ask when e valuating my writing:Does the description of my accomplishments sound like a professional to you? There is a tendency for people to do a similar job and what makes them seem professional to an admissions officer may not make them look as appealing to another person. When I want to describe myself, I generally avoid using phrases like 'same as a friend,' because I feel that means I am being too humble.What personal experience have I experienced? This is the type of question that is asked often when a student applies to college and relates something that is personal. It can be hard to come up with specific stories about your life, but by knowing the biggest things that define you as a person and how you grew from those experiences, you will be able to give a fuller description of yourself.How do you want others to describe you? Many people find it easier to describe themselves by going back to a personal statement, which is essentially an overview of their experiences, values, goals, interests, and experiences. I usually use this kind of statement when I'm applying to multiple schools and want to say something about myself to each school. However, the main idea is to be as specific as possible.I try to use sentences like 'describe yourself' rather than 'describe yourself as.' In addition, I don't use vague descriptions like 'a creative genius' because I really don't think that describes me very well. I think that comes across as extremely arrogant and quite self-serving.Your essay should inspire confidence in the reader.
