How to Describe Yourself in College Essay Sample
How to Describe Yourself in College Essay SampleI've often wondered why so many college admissions officers look at my essay when they're evaluating my college application. I recently completed my senior year of high school and have been admitted to four different undergraduate schools (I am currently in the process of applying to college). After I received my own college acceptance letter, I've realized that the people who read my writing are primarily interested in knowing what kind of a person I am and how I plan to contribute to the campus community.Describing myself is a theme throughout this piece. The objective is to create an overall impression of my personality by introducing myself as a young man or woman who is unique and probably eager to learn more about the world. I've found that the admissions officers that look at my written work feel a more confident feeling than other types of applicants. Here are some of the common questions about the admissions officers ask when e valuating my writing:Does the description of my accomplishments sound like a professional to you? There is a tendency for people to do a similar job and what makes them seem professional to an admissions officer may not make them look as appealing to another person. When I want to describe myself, I generally avoid using phrases like 'same as a friend,' because I feel that means I am being too humble. What personal experience have I experienced? This is the type of question that is asked often when a student applies to college and relates something that is personal. It can be hard to come up with specific stories about your life, but by knowing the biggest things that define you as a person and how you grew from those experiences, you will be able to give a fuller description of yourself. How do you want others to describe you? Many people find it easier to describe themselves by going back to a personal statement, which is essentially an overview of their experiences, values, goals, interests, and experiences. I usually use this kind of statement when I'm applying to multiple schools and want to say something about myself to each school. However, the main idea is to be as specific as possible.I try to use sentences like 'describe yourself' rather than 'describe yourself as.' In addition, I don't use vague descriptions like 'a creative genius' because I really don't think that describes me very well. I think that comes across as extremely arrogant and quite self-serving.Your essay should inspire confidence in the reader. If your writing feels forced or overly personal, the reader will see it as dishonest and see you as manipulative. As I mentioned earlier, I prefer to describe myself with specific examples rather than vague ones, and in the admissions office, I'm always asked to speak about my goals for the future.I've been privileged to have experienced a lot of different things throughout my life, and I feel that the admissions officers who read my writing alw ays feel that I present myself in a truthful and encouraging way. If you're looking to describe yourself, don't be afraid to get more specific!

Cancer Essays (3924 words) - RTT, Anatomical Pathology,
Cancer Cancer Of all the diseases and viruses that are known to man, no other can strike fear in so many people's hearts, as the word cancer. What is cancer? Cancer is a new growth of tissue resulting from a continuous proliferation of abnormal cells that have the ability to invade and destroy other tissues.1 Cancer may be found in any type of cell or tissue in the human body. Cancer is not found in just humans, but also in animals and plants. Cancer cells can grow where ever normal cells grow or divide. Cancer is not one disease but many single diseases classified under one name.2 In our bodies we produce many thousands of new cells everyday. We produce these cell in order to grow until we reach adulthood. When we reach adulthood, these cells reproduce primarily to heal wounds and to replace the cells that have died.3 When we look at a cancerous cells, we see that it divides endlessly. As the cell divides and multiplies, it takes up more and more of the space that the healthy cells once had to work in. These cells will take up more and more space until they are able to move into new areas of the body or the organism in which they live dies. This process of moving to new sites within the body is called metastasis.4 1. Robert A. Weiberg, Racing to the Beginning of the Road,Random House 1996, pg. XI. 2. Putnam's Sons, 1992, pg. 341. 1. There are many different types of cancer. Out of the hundreds of different types of cancer, there are three sub types to help classify the different types of cancer. First, Sarcomas, arise from connective and supportive tissue such as bone, cartilage, blood vessels, muscle and fat. Second, Carcinomas, which include the most frequently occurring forms of human cancer, arise from epithelial tissue, such as the skin and the lining of the body cavities and organs, and the glandular tissue of the breast and prostrate. Carcinomas with a structure resembling skin are termed squamous cell carcinomas. Those that resemble glandular tissue are called adenocarcinomas. Third, Leukemias and lymphomas include the cancers that involve blood forming tissues and are typified by the enlargement of the lymph nodes, the invasion of the spleen and bone marrow and the over production of immature white cells.5 The only number greater than the number of different types of cancer is the number of people found to have these deadly diseases. One million new cases of cancer are diagnosed in the United States alone each year. Five hundred thousand die each 5. It is also estimated that about 30% of the Americans living today, or 76 million Americans will develop cancer in their lifetime.6 As scientist search to cure this terrifying disease, with the help of millions of dollars in donations, we still do not even know what causes cancer to invade. We do understand that the diseases likeliness to form is heightened with the different environments that people live in. Researchers see that with constant contact with carcinogens, substances that promote the development of cancer, is almost a guarantee that the person will develop cancer at some point in their life. Chemicals, radiation and viruses are the main types of carcinogens. Constant exposure to these carcinogens cause gene abnormalities that can be inherited or induced in a body cell. These cells can also be damaged by outside sources. After many mutations from these carcinogens, it is thought that mutations will occur and will produce a malignant cell that will copy itself into many cancerous cells. Viruses are the cause of about 15% of all cancers. The virus is able to invade cells and cause them to synthesize new viral particles; viruses carry oncogenes that can 6. Chromosomes are the repository for all genetic information required to build a cell. 7 Chromosomal changes are now considered as common

Educational reform Essay Example
Educational reform Essay Example Educational reform Essay Educational reform Essay The subject of educational reform in light of the internet generation is one that is both controversial and thought provoking. When you look at quality of sources books are reputable but persistently outdated; the internet is updated constantly and cost- effective. The internet also provides incomparable numbers of sources for information, whereas a classroom has a regimented set of curriculum support from books and handouts. Classroom settings also only provide a peer to peer connection in eyesight, with a narrow scope of life experiences to diversify opinions. The internet is in no way crippled in that way, and diversity promotes creativity and growth. These reasons alone are enough of a reason why I believe that education is better provided when offered over the internet. When it comes to current information on the internet, there are a wealth of places that can further your research and provide a plethora of knowledge for free. Books in classrooms arena anywhere near free and the books are written from some time before the turn of the millennium, if not before the nineties. Books are constantly being re-written, too; they arent a cost-effective means of conveying information anymore. The internet is always being updated and peer-reviewed for accuracy, and you obviously dont have to buy it every time a new source is introduced. In classrooms, the teacher provides information through mediums of leaflets, books, printed handouts and movies. Setting aside the previously conveyed points of cost and out dated information, these methods are also narrowed in scope simply by the fact that it is regimented. Simply put, if the teacher doesnt provide another means of the information, the students arent guaranteed to get enough. The internet is frequently akin to an ocean of information, everywhere you look you can find sources and studies, and quite often you can gain the same ideas provided in the source material and then some because there is an unlimited scope at your disposal. The internet is no longer the next big thing, it is the now. Every first world country has access to some form of the internet, and with it they bring their own experiences ND knowledge. There is simply no accurate way to bring this kind of diversity into a classroom setting in any other way. Subjects like racism and bigotry simply cannot exist without a narrow minded scope of ideology, and meeting people from other countries or even other states can help broaden the horizons of knowledge for students. Diversity in general is highly touted as a way to solve problems and bring new ideas to the table, why wouldnt you want such a good thing for students in the ext generation? Without a higher standard of learning, the United States will remain falling on the list of countries with college graduates. Outdated sources of information and limited mediums of conveyance are easily to blame, and the solution lies before us on nearly every smart phone and computer; the internet is the ultimate conveyance of school. We need to move with other developed countries into the now, not stay in 1976 when your book was printed and your teacher was born.

The benefits of international portfolio investment Essay
The benefits of international portfolio investment - Essay Example There are numerous benefits of internationalizing the portfolio. By internationalizing, the individual or firm will be able to minimize the risk; invest in growing markets thus benefiting from their growth; hedge the prices of goods in the consumption basket; enjoy higher return than expected; diversify investments; and enjoy lower variation of return. High economic growth leads to the higher GDP and high growth level. This attract other investors from other countries in invest in the growing economies. Growing economies are determined by the World Bank as the ones which have average income levels but high economic growth levels. These emerging economies can be of Middle East, Asia, Africa or Latin America. The growth levels attract the foreign investment which further improves their economy. These economies including some of the developed ones such as Japan and Netherlands provide tremendous opportunities to foreign investors. The financial investment in these countries enable indiv iduals and firm to increase their investment by two fold within a couple of years. Hence, it is seen as a good opportunity by investors. However, the small economies are still riskier compared to developed economies. In small economies, the prices might fluctuate rapidly and in case of liquefying the investment, losses might have to be borne. Also, the emerging economies might not be too stable politically. Thus, there is a political risk involved such as instability of political system, change of policies regarding foreign investment and remittances, change in foreign exchange policy and change of property rights. These factors make the investment in emerging markets riskier compared to developed economies where there is political stability. ... (Perry) However, the small economies are still riskier compared to developed economies. (Yavas, 2007) In contrast to this, the overall portfolio risk will be reduced because there will be less, no or negative correlation between markets which will be beneficial for the investor. On the other hand, there is a difference in taxes, potential information and forecasts. Some of the forecast made by countries might differ significantly from actual result. Thus, th e exact picture or perfect information regarding investment might not be available. The markets are seemed to have integrated over the years and are considered negatively or not at all correlated to each other. Thus, the investors benefit from investing worldwide because it one investmentââ¬â¢s return are falling, other investmentââ¬â¢s return might increase or remain same. Thus, the investor will be better off. However, each country has its own investing and currency exchange policy which might be a hindrance for the investor. The investor benefits from ââ¬Ëpure diversificationââ¬â¢ by investing worldwide but might face policy restrictions. The nature of the budgeting and planning process Essay
The nature of the budgeting and planning process - Essay Example The overall purpose of the budgeting process is to ensure that the organization has enough finances of operations and expenditure. The first purpose of the budgeting process is communication, where each department in the organization communicates the need for resources and how the resources will be used. This is done by explaining the volume of activities that the department will engage in and the amount of resources that will be needed. The budgeting and planning process is also important for coordination of tasks in the organization, since the different departments in the organization perform interrelated task (Hansen and Wim, 2004). Coordination of processes is achieved when the different departments provide a plan for their resource allocation and the relation to the resource allocation from other departments. Budgets are also used for planning the activities of the organization for a specified period. This is achieved by preparing budgets that predict resource usage for forthcoming fiscal periods. When these budgets are prepared, the organization can determine the resource needs and, therefore, prepare the necessary financial resources for acquisition of the planned resources. Budgets are also used for control and motivation, where the budgets act as a measure of performance and improvement. This means that the prepared budget is used as a standard of measurement of performance, and the different departments are motivated to improve their performance according to the budget allocated. The nature of the budgeting and planning process is reflected by the characteristics of the budget prepared by the departments and the organization. The budget can be defined as a plan for the allocation of financial resources to the various processes in the organization, therefore, the budgeting and planning process refers to the steps taken to prepare and measure organizational performance using a budget. The requirements of the budgeting and planning process can then be inferred from the above definition of a budget. The budgeting and planning process requires knowledge of the required resources by each department, the expected usage of resources, the forecast of the cost of resources, and the expected financial inflows and outflows. Types of Budgets According to Sean, Garrison and Noreen (2008), budgets can be classified into many types, including zero-based budgets, incremental budgets, fixed and flexibl e budgets. These budgets classifications are done according to the basis for budget preparation, whether the budget is prepared according to activity level, fiscal periods, or resource availability. Zero-based budgeting refers to a budgeting method where each department is required to provide a justification of all the expenses presented in the budget statement. Traditional budgeting methods require a manager to add or subtract amounts from the previous fiscal period budget, however, zero-based budgets start from a zero baseline and all expenditures have to be justified. Conversely, incremental budgets are based on the previous periodââ¬â¢

Please Take Your Butt Outside Essay -- Smoking Ban Smokers Health Essa
Please Take Your Butt Outside ââ¬Å"A smoking section in a bar or a restaurant is like having a peeing section in a public swimming pool, the pee just like the smoke will spread, and there is no way of escaping it,â⬠said an anonymous author. Smoking affects many peopleââ¬â¢s lives each and everyday. For example, I can not even count the times that I have been in a restaurant in a ââ¬Å"non-smoking sectionâ⬠and still not been able to enjoy my meal because of the smokers on the other side of the restaurant. Smoking in public places has become a controversial topic over the past several years. Many places, such as California, Montana, and the United Kingdom have tried to ban smoking in public places for years in order to protect the air and the citizens. Although, many smokers strongly disagree, I believe that smoking in public places should be banned. Of course banning smoking in public places would cost businesses as well as take away from peopleââ¬â¢s rights as American citizens. Business owners who ban smoking in their restaurants could in the long run face decreasing money coming into the business. For example, those who smoke may decide to go to another restaurant that allows smoking rather than those restaurants that have banned smoking. Other costs to the business owner would be signs that would have to be put up to inform people of their non-smoking policies. In addition to costing businesses, many people would argue that banning smoking in public places is unconstitutiona...
